OK, so FSD didn’t work in Illinois on the toll roads. The plan was then to cancel the subscription and fall back to Traffic Aware Cruise Control. Did that. TACC worked just fine in the early Model 3 we traded in for our snazzy new Model Y. The Model 3 would maintain speed and change lanes safely. Even automatically. It was great on trips. Should be good, right?

So, we took a little 200 mile trip this Tuesday and Wednesday. TACC would maintain speed and distance, but signaling for a lane change cancelled speed control, slowing us suddenly and creating general confusion. Every damned time. TACC in the Model Y is just as screwed up everywhere as FSD is in Illinois. It was very distracting and dangerous to use. To change lanes, get your foot ready, check your mirrors, signal, catch the speed change before you are rammed, correct, and proceed – unless the car beside you has moved up while you were running the lane change check list. Then reset the TACC setpoint and motor on. Until the next lane change. Very annoying.

I recently read Corey Doctorow’s book, “Enshitification”. Good read. Maybe this is what has happened at Tesla. It appears that Tesla has enshitified their TACC to the point that you must pay the monthly FSD subscription fee to get something that won’t drive you crazy. Except in Illinois.

Unless this changes soon, we are driving our last Tesla.
